Teacher: Amy Ortiz

Quick Write: Whats one food dish you haven't ate in along time? Close your eyes and imagine it right infront of you. Can you taste, smell, feel the food dish?

On food dish i haven't ate in along time that i really like to eat is lasagna. this is my favorite dish in the world if i had to choose something to eat out of many things it would be that. Although I am not able to taste or smell the lasagna, I know it does smell and taste delicious.  I am able to imagine it i could imagine all that melted cheese and the pasta and the meats. LOVELY!!!! Makes me want to go home and make one.!  :)

Reflection: From what we read on page 23-29, What can you tell about Jean Dominique Bauby's mindset memory? Is his memory taunting him or helping him?

I believe Jean Dominique Bauby's is helping him because since he isn't able to move not one muscle the only thing he is able to do is imagine thats the bet way he can travel and move with his spirit out of his body.

Quick Write: Think about one of the most important memories you have. Indulge yourself in it. Can you taste it? Smell it? Feel it? What if that memory were taken from you? Will it still exist?

One of the most important memories i have was when i had my 15th birthday celebrated in Dominican Republic. I enjoyed myself so much, if this memory were to be taken from me i would be very upset because i really did enjoy myself that day and my parents went through a lot of trouble just to be able to see me smile and celebrate my special day with me. if this memory was to be taken from me i believe it woulds till exist because that is in my head, but if i were to ave amnesia i would love for somebody to try and get my memory back.

Final Reflection:  "I think therefor I am" Interpret the quote as it relates to Clive. In other words does Clive know he exists? Does he exist? What does all of this say about memory? Finally, What is your brainy explanation for Clive only remembering love and music?

This quote basically defines that a person is trying to prove that if you are able to think for yourself, and speak, or move etc. it does mean that you exist. I believe that Clive does know he exist because as the quote says " I think therefor I am" he is able to think on his own no matter how many times he forgets something that had happened recently. He is also able to see himself so by that he knows he exists. All this states that the memory takes a really strange part of the brain, maybe there are parts of his brain that is able to remember some of his life but the other parts he is just not able to remember anything, If i am wrong how else an you explain Clive remembering his passion for love and music.

Quick Write: What in your opinion, is the most productive way to read and study a book or novel, as a class? What sorts of activities engage you?

The most productive way to read and study a book or novel as a class would be for the students to take turns reading parts of the book, and maybe afterwords we can be able to do an assignment reflecting the part of the book that we had read. Even though some students might prefer reading separate and then discuss what they have read that day.

Quick Write: What does imagination mean to you? How important is it? What about memory? Can you have one without the other?

Imagination is when you place yourself inside your head and get to view things in a way you cant see in real life.
I believe imagination is very important because you see the world in a difference.

reflection: Bauby's mindset is somewhat different from ours because for a person to be able to write a whole book with just using one blinking eye must be very difficult. There's people out here that cant even communicate with their mouths so i cant imagine only being able to use one eye.

Quick Write: Identify the people, places, or things, ideas that make life worth living for you personally.

I believe the people who make life living for me are my parents, well mainly my family because they are the ones who support me the most on many of my decisions, but i also believe that me myself i make my life worth living because i know how to enjoy living my life very well, i make sure i have fun and so forth.

Video:
Observation: I observed that living with locked-in syndrome is not something easy to handle, you cant move any part of your body which must be very struggling for the person.

Two Questions:
1. Can a person with locked-in syndrome recover?
2. How do they learn to control their way of speaking?

I feel bad for anybody who is out there living with this type of syndrome, i wouldnt want no person to go through that.

Questions about Jean-Dominique Bauby
How was he able to write a memoir only by using one eye?
How long did it take him to write his memoir?

What makes life worth living are all the things you are able to accomplish day by day, such as attending school, work, being to spend time with your family, friends, etc.
